Nickel Alloys Explained: Inconel 625, Hastelloy C276 and Monel 400 — When to Specify and How They Compare
When stainless steel reaches its limit — high temperature, strong acids, seawater with high chlorides — engineers step up to nickel alloys. These materials cost 5 to 20× more than 316L, so specifying them correctly (and not over-specifying) is where real money is saved. For an alloy supplier, they are also the products where technical guidance wins the order.
This guide covers the three nickel alloys buyers enquire about most — Inconel 625, Hastelloy C276 and Monel 400 — what each resists, where it's used, the governing standards, and a decision table to pick the right one.
Why Nickel Alloys Outperform Stainless
Nickel-rich chemistries deliver:
- Outstanding high-temperature strength — Inconel 625 stays strong past 650°C where 316L has long softened
- Exceptional corrosion resistance in oxidizing and reducing media — Hastelloy C276 resists both
- Seawater immunity — Monel 400 and 625 are virtually immune to chloride pitting and SCC
- Oxidation and carburization resistance at furnace temperatures
The trade-off is price and harder machining/welding — which makes correct grade selection essential.
Inconel 625 (Alloy 625, UNS N06625)
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Ni | ≥58% (balance) |
| Cr / Mo / Nb | 20–23% / 8–10% / 3.15–4.15% |
| Density | 8.44 g/cm³ |
| Service temp | Cryogenic to ~980°C |
Resists: oxidation, carburization, chloride pitting and SCC, and many acids. Use for: aerospace exhaust, marine hardware, chemical process, nuclear, flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers, and high-strength fasteners.
Hastelloy C276 (UNS N10276)
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Ni | ~57% (balance) |
| Cr / Mo / W | 14.5–16.5% / 15–17% / 3–4.5% |
| Density | 8.89 g/cm³ |
| Note | Low C + low Si — resists weld-zone sensitization |
Resists: the widest range — oxidizing and reducing acids, wet chlorine, hypochlorite, sulfuric, hydrochloric and acetic acids. Use for: strong acid handling, reactors, heat exchangers, sour service, and wherever both oxidizing and reducing conditions occur.
Monel 400 (UNS N04400)
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Ni | 63–70% |
| Cu | 28–34% |
| Density | 8.83 g/cm³ |
| Service temp | Up to ~480°C |
Resists: seawater and brackish water (immune to chloride SCC), hydrofluoric acid, and alkaline solutions. Use for: marine pump and valve parts, propeller shafts, heat exchanger tubing in seawater, and HF acid service.
Quick Selection Table
| If your service is… | Best choice |
|---|---|
| Seawater, marine, HF acid | Monel 400 |
| High temp + oxidation + chloride | Inconel 625 |
| Strong mixed acids (H₂SO₄/HCl) | Hastelloy C276 |
| Sour gas (H₂S + chlorides) | Inconel 625 / C276 (per NACE) |
| Just needs more than 316L, not extreme | Consider 904L / 254 SMO / duplex first (cheaper) |
Cost tip: before jumping to a nickel alloy at 10× the price, check whether super-austenitic 254 SMO or super duplex 2507 already covers the service. They often do, at a fraction of the cost.
Forms and Standards
| Alloy | Common forms | ASTM material specs |
|---|---|---|
| Inconel 625 | plate, sheet, bar, pipe, wire, fasteners | B443 (plate), B446 (bar), B444 (pipe) |
| Hastelloy C276 | plate, sheet, bar, pipe | B575 (plate), B574 (bar), B622 (pipe) |
| Monel 400 | bar, plate, pipe, fasteners | B164 (bar), B127 (plate), B165 (pipe) |
Machining note: nickel alloys work-harden fast — use rigid setups, low speeds, positive rake, and continuous feed to avoid glazing. Welding is typically GTAW with matching filler; Inconel 625 is also used as a weld overlay.
FAQ
Is Monel 400 magnetic? It is only very slightly magnetic. More importantly, it will not rust in seawater, unlike steel fittings next to it.
Can 625 replace 316L in a heat exchanger? If the service exceeds 316L's temperature or chloride limit, yes — but at much higher cost. Engineer the upgrade only where justified.
What certification comes with nickel alloys? EN 10204 3.1 as standard; 3.2 with TUV/BV/SGS/Lloyd's for code work. PMI and full chemistry are expected.
Lead time? Stock forms (bar, plate in common sizes) can ship in weeks; mill-rolled thin gauges and large forgings run 8–16 weeks.
