Stainless Steel Pipe and Tube: Seamless vs Welded, ASTM A312/A213/A269 and How to Order Right

Stainless steel pipe is where specification mistakes cost the most. A wrong grade or wrong standard on a piping order can mean weld failures, leaks in chloride service, or customs delays when the certificate doesn't match the purchase order. This guide gives buyers a working understanding of seamless vs welded stainless pipe, the standards that govern them (ASTM A312, A213, A269, A358, B675), how size and schedule work, and a step-by-step ordering checklist.

Pipe vs Tube: The First Clarification

Although often used interchangeably, pipe and tube are technically different:

If you are buying for a pipeline, you need pipe under A312; if you are buying for a heat exchanger bundle, you need tube under A213 or A269.

Seamless vs Welded: What's the Real Difference?

Factor Seamless Welded (ERW/laser)
Production Hot-pierced solid billet, then rolled/extruded Cold-rolled strip, formed and welded
Wall uniformity ±12.5% (hot worked) Excellent — strip gauge is uniform
OD/ID concentricity Lower (eccentricity possible) High
Pressure rating Traditionally preferred for high pressure Equal when fully annealed & 100% tested
Max size Up to ~610 mm OD economical Up to 3000+ mm OD (plate-formed)
Cost Higher (lower yield from billet) 20–40% lower
Lead time Longer Shorter

Modern reality: ASME permits welded A312 pipe in most pressure applications, and for many services welded pipe with 100% eddy-current testing is accepted as seamless-equivalent. The main exceptions are heavy-wall, small-diameter, and some sour/cyclic services.

The Key Standards, Decoded

Standard Product Typical use
ASTM A312 / A312M Seamless & welded austenitic pipe, NPS General corrosive fluid service, process piping
ASTM A213 / A213M Seamless & welded ferritic/austenitic tube Boiler, superheater, heat exchanger tubes
ASTM A269 / A269M Seamless & welded austenitic tube (general) Instrumentation, general corrosion service
ASTM A358 Electric-fusion-welded (EFW) pipe for high temp Large-diameter welded pipe, class 1–5 options
ASTM A790 Duplex & super duplex pipe Offshore, seawater, chemical
EN 10216-5 European pressure pipe equivalent EU projects
Nickel alloy pipes ASTM B675 (904L), B443 (Alloy 625), B622 (Hastelloy C276) Severe corrosion service

Common ordering confusion: A312 covers pipe only. If your RFQ says "A312 tube", suppliers will either correct you or quote the wrong product. Use A213/A269 for tube.

Grades Most Often Ordered

Grade UNS Why it's ordered
304/304L S30403 General service, lowest cost
316/316L S31603 Chloride resistance, chemical & marine
321 S32103 Titanium-stabilized, thermal cycling 400–800°C
310S S31008 High temperature to ~1050°C
904L N08904 High acid/chloride, sulfuric acid service
Duplex 2205 S32205 High strength + seawater resistance
Alloy 825 / 625 / C276 — Severe service, oil & gas downhole, flue gas

Schedule, Size and Pressure Basics

Pipe wall thickness is designated by schedule (Sch 5S, 10S, 40S, 80S — the "S" denotes stainless). For a quick sense of what that means for a common size:

NPS OD (mm) Sch 10S wall Sch 40S wall Sch 80S wall
1" 33.4 2.77 3.38 4.55
2" 60.3 2.77 3.91 5.54
4" 114.3 3.05 6.02 8.56
6" 168.3 3.4 7.11 10.97
8" 219.1 3.76 8.18 12.7

Pressure capacity depends on grade, temperature and schedule — use ASME B31.3 for process design, and ask your supplier to confirm wall-to-standard compliance (a frequent shortcut in the market is underweight walls that pass OD checks but fail schedule).

Testing and Certification You Should Require

For pressure and corrosion-critical orders, specify:

Step-by-Step Ordering Checklist

  1. Product type: pipe (NPS + schedule) or tube (OD × wall in mm)
  2. Standard: A312 / A213 / A269 / A358 / A790, plus EN equivalent if project requires
  3. Grade + UNS, and whether L-grade (low carbon) is required for welding
  4. Seamless or welded — and if welded, weld class (per A358 class 1–5 or A312 seam type)
  5. Size range and lengths: single random (~6 m), double random, or fixed lengths
  6. Ends: plain bevel end (PE), threaded, or grooved
  7. Tests and certificates required, any third-party inspection (TUV/BV/SGS)
  8. Packing: bundle steel strapping, end caps, seaworthy export packing

Frequently Asked Questions

Can welded A312 pipe replace seamless? In most services, yes — ASME B31.3 accepts welded A312 with appropriate joint factors. Verify with your engineering standard; for heavy wall and certain oil & gas services, seamless remains specified.

What does the "S" in Sch 10S mean? It marks the stainless schedule series, with thinner walls than carbon-steel schedules at the same NPS. Ordering "Sch 40" instead of "Sch 40S" will get you the wrong wall.

Why is 316L preferred over 304 for piping? The 2–3% molybdenum in 316L raises pitting resistance substantially in chloride-containing fluids. For aggressive chlorides above 60°C, step up to 904L, 254 SMO or duplex.

What is the largest diameter available? Seamless is economical to ~610 mm OD. Larger diameters are produced as welded (A358 / A790) pipe from plate, up to and beyond 3000 mm.
