Stainless Steel Sheet Surface Finishes Explained: 2B, BA, No.4, HL and Which One to Order

Choosing the right surface finish is just as important as choosing the right grade when you buy stainless steel sheet. Two sheets of identical 304 chemistry can differ by 20–40% in price depending on the finish — and the wrong finish can cause rejected cosmetic parts, higher polishing costs, or corrosion issues in service.

This guide explains the five finishes buyers most commonly specify — 2B, BA, No.4, HL and No.8 (mirror) — how each is produced, typical applications, price relationships, and how to write the finish into your purchase order so you get exactly what you expect.

The Standard Finishes at a Glance

Finish Also called Production route Appearance Reflectivity Typical Ra (µm)
2B Mill finish Cold rolled + annealed + pickled + skin passed Smooth, grey, slightly dull Low 0.3–0.5
BA Bright annealed Cold rolled + annealed in controlled atmosphere (no pickling) Smooth, mirror-like High 0.05–0.15
No.4 Brushed / satin Ground with abrasive belts (~150–180 grit) over 2B Fine linear grain Semi-reflective 0.4–0.8
HL Hairline Continuous long-grit polishing over No.4 Uniform long linear lines Semi-reflective 0.2–0.5
No.8 Mirror Progressive buffing with fine abrasives over 2B or BA True mirror Very high ≤0.05

2B Finish: The Industrial Default

2B is the most widely ordered stainless steel sheet finish worldwide. After cold rolling, the strip is annealed and pickled, then given a final light skin pass with polished rolls. The result is a smooth, uniform, slightly grey surface.

Order 2B when: - The sheet will be painted, coated, laminated, or further polished by you - It is used for chemical equipment, tanks, cladding, and structural components where appearance is secondary - You want the lowest cost and the shortest lead time — 2B is a mill standard stock finish

Do not order 2B when the surface will be visible in a premium product — it has a duller, "industrial" look, and it can show subtle roll-mark mottling under strong lighting.

BA (Bright Annealed) Finish: Reflective Without Polishing

BA sheet is annealed in an oxygen-free hydrogen/nitrogen atmosphere so the surface never oxidizes and no pickling is needed. The as-rolled brightness is preserved, giving a mirror-like surface directly from the mill.

Order BA when: - You need a bright, reflective appearance but cannot afford to polish in-house - The application involves forming, such as automotive trim, kitchen equipment panels, elevator interiors - Corrosion resistance matters: BA surfaces are smoother and slightly more corrosion-resistant than 2B because no pickled micro-roughness remains

Watch out for: BA loses its mirror quality after welding or heavy forming — plan for post-finishing if the final part is processed afterward.

No.4 and HL: The Brushed Architectural Finishes

No.4 (satin) is produced by grinding the 2B surface with abrasive belts, producing short, fine, semi-directional grain. It is the classic finish for appliances, food-service equipment, and public-facing architectural panels because it hides fingerprints and minor scratches well.

HL (hairline) takes the process further with continuous long-grit polishing, producing a uniform, straight, fine line over the full sheet length. It is preferred for high-end architectural cladding, elevator doors, and decorative panels where adjacent sheets must match perfectly.

Critical specification tip: always agree the grit number and grain direction with your supplier. A "No.4" from one mill can look visibly different from another's. For projects requiring visual consistency across many sheets, ask for the same production lot or a reference sample approval before mass production.

Price and Lead-Time Relationships

Finish Relative price (304, 2B = 100) Lead time
2B 100 Stock
BA 105–115 Stock / short
No.4 115–130 Stock / short
HL 125–140 1–3 weeks
No.8 mirror 150–200 2–4 weeks

Prices vary by grade, thickness and quantity — the ratios above are indicative for 0.5–3.0 mm sheet.

How Thickness Interacts With Finish

Finishes are easiest to hold consistent in the 0.5–3.0 mm cold-rolled range. For plate above 3 mm (hot rolled, No.1 base surface), decorative finishes require grinding off more material, which increases cost and can affect flatness. If your product needs a decorative finish above 3 mm, discuss single-piece polishing capacity with your supplier early.

How to Specify the Finish in Your Purchase Order

A complete spec line should include:

  1. Grade + UNS (e.g., 304 / S30408, 316L / S31603)
  2. Standard (ASTM A240 or EN 10088-2)
  3. Thickness × width × length with tolerance class (e.g., ASTM A480 half-standard)
  4. Finish designation (2B / BA / No.4 / HL / No.8) plus grit and grain direction for polished finishes
  5. PVC protective film — thickness (e.g., 70 µm) and single/double side, for polished and mirror finishes
  6. Certification: EN 10204 3.1 MTC, heat number on every bundle

The most common claim dispute in sheet trade is "finish expectation mismatch". Approving a physical sample before mass production removes almost all of this risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 2B finish the same as 2D? No. 2D is matte, dull and non-reflective (no skin pass after pickling). 2B has the final skin pass giving it a smooth, semi-dull sheen. 2B is far more common.

Can I use BA sheet outdoors? Yes — grades 316 BA perform well outdoors, but fingerprints and water marks show more on bright surfaces than on No.4. Consider a fingerprint-resistant (AFP) coating for visible outdoor panels.

Which finish is best for food contact? 2B and No.4 are both accepted. No.4 with its fine grain is often preferred for worktops; 2B for equipment linings. Both clean well and resist bacteria adhesion.

What is the thinnest stainless sheet available? Cold-rolled sheet is commonly available from 0.3 mm (foils down to 0.05 mm as strip). Below ~0.4 mm, handling and flatness become the limiting factors rather than production.
