Machined Ring Forgings & Seal Rings: GH3030 Example, Tolerances and RFQ
Quick answer: A machined ring forging is a seamless annular forging (ring-rolled or open-die) that has been turned and faced to finished dimensions — used as seal rings, bearing races, collars, flanges and sleeves. The sample in our shop is a GH3030 (Inconel 600-equivalent) ring labelled "GH3030 环样" with the spec "Q/BS 5062-82" called out on the tag. Specify ID / OD / height, grade, face flatness, surface finish (Ra) and any seal-face requirement, and the result is a ring ready to drop into an assembly or finish-drill.
What a machined ring forging is
Start from a forged ring — either ring-rolled (seamless, circumferential grain flow) or blocked on open dies — then turn the OD, bore and faces to size. Versus a raw forged ring or a forged billet, the machined ring is brought to a finished, inspectable condition: parallel faces, a true bore, and a known sound surface.
Reading the label "GH3030 环样"
| Mark | Meaning |
|---|---|
| GH3030 | Chinese GB Ni–Cr high-temp alloy, equivalent to Inconel 600 / UNS N06600 |
| 环样 | "Ring sample / ring stock" — the part is a ring, here a sample piece |
| Q/BS 5062-82 | The specification cited on the tag for the high-temperature alloy forging |
"环" (huán) is simply "ring"; the label tells you the alloy and that this is ring-form stock, with the controlling spec noted for traceability.
Common ring geometries and seal-ring forms
| Form | Geometry | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Seal ring | Close-tolerance faces, may be grooved | Static/dynamic sealing, reactors, valves |
| Bearing race | Tight ID/OD, hardened if steel | Rotating equipment |
| Flange / collar ring | Flat-faced annulus | Pipe and vessel flanges |
| Sleeve / spacer | Long bore, thin wall | Shaft sleeves, spacers |
The blue padding and wooden crate in the photo are standard transit protection for finished machined faces.
Grades we ring-forge
| Family | Example grades | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ni–Cr superalloy | GH3030 / Inconel 600, 601, 625 | Heat, corrosion, strength |
| Ni–Cu | Monel 400 | Seawater service |
| Ni–Mo/Cr–Mo | Hastelloy C-276 | Aggressive acid |
| Stainless / duplex | 304/316, 2205, F6NM | General and offshore |
| Age-hardenable | Inconel 718 (GH4169) | High strength |
For a specific Inconel 625 ring, see our rolled-ring guide; for solid faced parts, a machined disc/flange blank is the shorter route.
Machining, tolerances and seal faces
| Item | What to specify |
|---|---|
| ID / OD / height | mm, with tolerance bands |
| Face flatness | per face, or overall (e.g. 0.05–0.2 mm) |
| Parallelism | if the ring stacks or seals |
| Surface finish (Ra) | bore and faces; seal faces often Ra 0.4–1.6 µm |
| Grooves / features | O-ring groove, step, chamfer — on a drawing |
| Heat treatment | annealed, or age-hardened for 718-class grades |
Quality and inspection
- Ultrasonic testing to ASTM A388 / EN 10228-3 across the ring body.
- Dimensional check of OD, ID, height, concentricity and face flatness.
- Chemical and macro-etch as agreed, with MTC traceability.
Machined ring-forging RFQ checklist
- ID / OD / height (mm), or ID + wall if easier.
- Grade (e.g. GH3030 / N06600, or Inconel 625).
- Condition: annealed, or age-hardened.
- Tolerances: OD/ID bands, flatness, parallelism.
- Surface finish and any seal groove / feature drawing.
- UT and quantity; raw-forged or finish-machined delivery.
FAQ
Q: Is a machined ring forging better than a cast ring? A: For pressure, fatigue and creep, yes — it is seamless with forged grain flow and no weld or cast porosity; compare cast vs forged.
Q: What does "GH3030 环样" mean? A: GH3030 is the alloy (Inconel 600-equivalent); "环" means ring and "样" means sample/stock — i.e. a ring-form sample of that alloy, with spec Q/BS 5062-82 noted on the tag.
Q: Can you supply the ring finish-machined with a seal groove? A: Yes — send the drawing (ID/OD, groove profile, Ra) and we deliver turned, faced and grooved, not just the raw forging.
Q: Ring forging or machined disc for my part? A: Annular part (ring, collar, hollow sleeve) → ring forging. Solid faced part (blind flange, gear blank) → machined disc.
Q: Do you ring-forge age-hardenable grades like 718? A: Yes. Inconel 718 (GH4169) rings are rolled and then age-hardened; see the 718 heat-treatment guide for the cycle.
